Oklahoma Pioneer

Over the Memorial Day weekend we decided to make a quick trip to Pawhuska, Oklahoma, Home of The Pioneer Woman. For those of you who may not know, Ree Drummond has a show on the Food Network called The Pioneer Woman. The Mercantile is a really nice renovated old building in Downtown Pawhuska. Excellent dining and atmosphere. Much to our surprise, Ladd Drumond was outside greeting guests.IMG_3869

We went to the Mercantile and did some shopping but the line was so long we decided to wait a while to eat.Pioneer Woman Mercantile_20170527_006

We went to the Lodge where the show is filmed. Its a very nice place that they renovated a few years ago as well. The view was beautiful.

They have several hundred head of wild horses on the Drummond Ranch. It has rained enough everything was nice and green.

Back at the Mercantile, we ate what we call LU-PPER. A cross between lunch and supper.

After getting stuffed, a little more shopping and Guess who we saw? The Pioneer Woman herself.

Afterwards, we took a little walk on the “Swinging Bridge” This was cool and Grandma went as far as anyone!

This is a white-Tailed Kite(at least from what I know). It is a member of the Hawk family. If you view the picture at full size, you can see its Eyes appear Red. It’s hard to take a picture of a bird at telephoto lengths on a swinging bridge.

Sunday I wanted to go to the Tall Grass Prairie. It is one of the largest protected Prairies in the US covering 39,000 acres according to the WIKI. It is really cool to see several hundred Bison roaming free.Tallgrass Prairie_20170528_001

We saw some up close and personal!

It was a very peaceful ride around the preserve.

There are several different species of birds there as well. These Western Meadowlarks are singing all over the place.

This Bob White Quail let us know he was there.

Once we left and headed home we actually took a Scenic Route! We drove about 30 miles or more on the dirt roads and ended up only 6 miles from Kansas.

Over all we had a really fun time. The best of rest are here

I’m not sure where our next adventure will lead us.

For the Birds

I love being outside in the first place, and have always had a fascination with bird photography. I don’t have the $7000.00 camera and lens that will shoot 10 frames per second from 100 yards away, but mine does pretty good on a very limited budget. Since our trip to Corpus Christi a few weeks ago, my fascination with Birds has grown even more. Of course Coastal birding is completely different than North Texas birding. At some point I want to take a trip to Weslaco, TX to the World Birding Center and Bosque Nature Preserve in Albuquerque, NM. Of course these are not day trips from Plano. So for now I’ll stay in the back yard and surrounding areas of North Texas.

We have all kinds of birds in the park behind our house. It seems I never have my camera when I see something unique like a little finch or a crow.

This Red Tail Hawk was almost out of my range.

M R Ducks, C M Wangs! – Here are a few with babies in a row.

This Robin was taking a bath.

We have a nest of Mockingbirds in our Magnolia tree in the back yard. Mama and Daddy don’t like us getting too close to the nest and now babies!

When we were at Daniels house, there were some House Swallows in a nest under his front porch. These are curious(to me anyway) little birds. They build nests under porch overhangs and culverts along the roads out of mud and twigs.

Last weekend I went looking for the baby ducks again and much to my surprise I found some bucket list birds, Eastern Screech Owls. There were actually 5 or 6 nesting in  a tree down by the creek.

I’m in the process of building a bird feeding station in hopes of getting really good shots of some other birds. I also purchased a camouflage changing tent so I can be a little closer to the station. We’ll see!

There will be more to come but for now, I’ll keep my eyes and ears open,

Elgin, Texas Spring 2017

Elgin, Texas April 28-30, 2017 – pronounced Elg-In.

We took Juanita’s Mom, Chana, to see her eldest son, Daniel, for her 93rd birthday. He lives in a very small town named McDade, about 35 miles east of Austin. Elgin is about 24 miles from Austin. It is a small town of 8100 people or so. Downtown is filled with historical old buildings that have now been renovated into Antique stores and shops. The rest of the town is like most other small towns across Texas. There are some really pretty places and some that should be condemned.

Here are a few shots of both places.

The train was a building block of most old towns.  Of course next to the tracks was the Grain elevator. I think the grain may get wet.

A retired old blacksmith shop. I really wanted to go inside this place!

This is Sacred Heart Catholic Church. We listened to a very nice homily from Fr. Charles Van Winkle. He has published 3 books and can be found at his website.

Corpus Christi Spring 2017

My lovely wife and I went to Corpus Christi Texas for a Catholic Daughters Convention April 20-23, 2017. While she was at the convention most of the time, I had a photography outing. I took over 850 pictures of the event and areas in and around Corpus.

Nice weather produced some pretty sunrises.

I rode my bike to the Naval Air Station and saw several birds. The birds I saw and wanted to photograph was a Red Tipped Spoonbill. They look similar to Flamingos.  When I dove there in the car, of course they were already gone and it was getting hot.

I had a nice surprise when I loaded the Pictures on the PC.

I thought this seaweed was interesting

Afterwards I drove to Mustang Island to Bob Hall Pier.

I don’t know what this bird is, but he looks intimidating. I just googled it and it is an Osprey.

I tried some long exposure shots at night of the Corpus Christi bay and skyline. Some are pretty good but even on the tripod the wind was shaking my camera. Crazy!

Birds everywhere.

I got photobombed with a seagull. Surprise!

This is one of my favorites!

Along the Docks there are several actively working shrimp boats.

Along the coast line as well is a little ways in town, there were some interesting places from yesteryear.

Some planned graffiti and some not so much.

I walked to the top of the Harbor Bridge, (well almost) – This bridge is 16 stories high at the road surface to the water. The little walkway is barely wide enough for two people back to back. It was a little freaky to say the least!

I have posted the some of the better pictures here.

Next weekend we go to Bastrop, Texas for Channa’s 93rd Birthday! Stay tuned!

We made a quick trip to Levelland last weekend (04-07-17). I had a little time Saturday morning to take a few shots.

These are the Iris in the yard. Channa (my mother-in-law) has a very green thumb.

On our way back to Plano, I took the road of my childhood through Haskell Texas. We didn’t spend much time in Haskell, but there are MANY photo opportunities along the way.

A world of Concrete

Neighborhood Petroglyphs!

According to Wikipedia Petroglyphs are images created by removing part of a rock surface by incising, picking, carving, or abrading, as a form of rock art. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petroglyph

I believe just about anything can make a good photograph and hopefully I have captured some here.

I carry my camera most of the time on my daily walk in the morning and/or at lunch and try to be more observant of things, I started the noticing concrete. Of course we have lots of it around here and I have seen several places with something scribbled or an OOPS moment. There are several shades of concrete with weathering and some a little newer.

Liquid Photography

I have been waiting to post this since the A to Z project. This is my iteration of Liquid  Photography.

What a fun project. I will say this is probably the messiest! Milk is not friendly when splashed around. Also to get the colored water right, I used some food coloring and Jello (not a wise choice). It took a half a roll of paper towels and some patience as well as a lot of shots to get what I captured. Over the few thousand pictures I shot, I managed to get several keepers.

The camera was mounted to a tripod and all settings were manual so I could control the speed and light. I used my remote switch to press the shutter. It sometimes felt like rubbing your tummy and patting your head trying to pour, drop, drip the liquid and snap the pictures at the same time. The hardest part is focus, especially shooting  in the aquarium. There is really nothing to focus on till the water or milk hits the water. Then its almost too late. At first I used a zip lock bag with a pin hole, then water bottles, wine bottles, solo cup, a turkey injector, and a concoction I made from a Garden Drip line and a Dollar Tree cup.

I used food coloring, Jello for the water and dollar wrapping paper for the backgrounds. The key is to get the drips fast enough for the collisions and not making too many ripples.

The aquarium was purchased at goodwill. I colored the water a bit with yellow food coloring. At each side I used red and blue colored gel paper to create the effect. Then came the milk!

Some of these are flipped upside down for effect.

A little wine?

Milk is messy in the little measuring tablespoon.

Ahhh…Coffee! I found the perfect burlap sack at an antique store. Sprinkle some beans and let my imagination do what it does. Trying to capture steam is not hard, but you have to be ready. The lighting setup was trial and many errors.

I’ll put some of the better ones here and the rest on my google page.

Waco Texas

Waco, Texas

March 11, 2017

We decided to take a road a trip with some friends to the home of Fixer Upper TV show, Magnolia Market and Silos last weekend.

For those of you who may not have seen the show, Chip and Joanna Gaines appear on a very good show on HGTV named Fixer Upper. Although the stars of the show were not there, we did see Joanna Gaines Mom plus a few thousand other folks. I have posted a few pictures here but the rest will be on my google photo page. I’ll provide a link towards the bottom of this post.

The Silos were built several years ago and remained empty for years till these two decided to Fix them Up. The whole thing encompasses their offices, a retail store and a bakery. Around the back  and sides of the property there are food trucks as well as a play area for kids and adults!

IMG_3529After a while I wandered off to downtown. Then we went to the Brazos river to see the suspension bridge.

In the next few weeks I will post my next project – Liquid Photography!

A to Z Project

My version of an A to Z Project

Here it is and February is half over. Wow time really does fly.

Not much photographically happened over the last several weeks but I am trying a new photo project.

It is an A to Z project where the subject of the picture starts with or represents a letter of the alphabet. Some A to Z projects must be shot alphabetically or be a representation of the letter, but I’m breaking the rules (there really aren’t any rules). My goal is to complete this project by the end of February.

The hard part is not finding things, it’s making a photograph and not just a picture. There is a difference you know.

A quote from the great Ansel Adams:  “You don’t take a photograph, you make it”.

I’m trying to keep it to one or two photos of each letter. I also want to use photos I have taken during the project and not some already on my PC.
